Interdisciplinary program without an exploratory project: COOPIX2 (2025 - 2026)

Characterization of the vulnerability of cooperative economic systems in a context of multiple hydroclimatic risks and transition

French vineyards, which play a key economic and cultural role, are highly exposed to climate risks and market shifts, rendering their ability to adapt both complex and uncertain. The COOPIX project aims to assess this impact, while strengthening partnerships with cooperatives and proposing a conceptual framework to analyze their vulnerabilities and adaptive capacities. To achieve this, it combines data analysis, field monitoring, and the development of tools designed to support decision-making when faced with multiple risks.

Context and challenges

Vineyards in Europe—and particularly in France—represent a significant portion of agricultural land, generate local income and jobs, and contribute to the cultural identity of their regions. This sector is highly vulnerable to changes in climate and markets. In France, several wine-growing regions are experiencing a structural crisis that has led the government (in a press release dated January 31, 2024) to take emergency measures (80 million euros) in support of the industry and to establish a fund to help it adapt and restructure (150 million euros). Taking part in this adaptation process may lead to changes in agricultural production practices (choice of grape varieties), organizational changes (joining a cooperative), or even the partial or total abandonment of the activity (grapevine removal).

In the context of climate change, it is particularly difficult to predict the suitability of these choices, especially since climate risks (floods, frost, heat, drought, hail) are likely to evolve, and their combined effects are not yet sufficiently understood. Furthermore, changes in the phenological cycle of grapevines (an earlier start to the growing season) are compounded by organizational shifts in production structures. The combination of these various factors makes it challenging to understand and analyze the vulnerability of viticultural systems to multiple risks.

Goals

The COOPIX program (denoted here with a “2”) aims to consolidate the original COOPIX consortium (funded by MP XRisques under the 2023 AMI), in order to refine the research questions and outreach with two wine cooperatives. As part of the one-year extension of the initial COOPIX program, four goals have been set:

  1. contribute to characterizing how climate risks affect viticulture by analyzing data on agricultural disasters
  2. strengthen direct engagement by staying connected with existing stakeholders, and by establishing a partnership with a third wine cooperative that showcases a contrasting (northern) exposure
  3. contribute to drafting a full ANR proposal
  4. draft a position paper proposing a conceptual framework to characterize the vulnerability and adaptive capacities of wine cooperative networks
